The Ritz

Published by DM in Bright and Sparkling Ideas • 31/03/2011 00:26:16

Like Donald Trump, Bill Gates, Kiyosaki, Murdoch, Ford, etc. I've reached the point to become nearly broke two times. Only with me that happened twice within just one year - the same when I arrived to live in London.

The following story occurred in the times of my second bankruptcy.
I was employed in the Ritz however as a chambermaid. I was still missing the prominent social rank I used to have in my country, so I felt very uncomfortable on my new position of being a chambermaid. To regain the looks I used to have in my better times I started wearing my best outfit including pairs of very elegant heels. Dressed up like that I went for a walk in the nearby Green Park. That place had a very positive influence over me, so I enjoyed my walks there and almost every day I would sit on the same bench. I would either read a book or contemplate over philosophical issues.

One day I sat on my bench but soon I realized that I had forgotten to take a book, so I started chatting through my mobile. Suddenly I noticed that a very nice gentleman was approaching me. I felt a bit irritated as there were so many other benches that hadn't been occupied however the gentleman came to mine.
Did I say a very nice gentleman? Yes, he had a really wonderful expression and noble manners, but it was obvious that it was inborn. I mean, it had nothing to do with his social position; he was dressed very casually, even a bit shabby.
Hmm, quite disappointing!
While analyzing the results of my inner scan, the gentleman had come to my bench and had given me the most beautiful smile I had ever seen.
He asked me for permission to sit next to me.
Permission was given.

"Am I disturbing you? Perhaps you are busy and preoccupated with your phone?", he asked politely.
"Of course you aren't," I said. "I've just finished a very important business conversation. I did not want the others in my office to hear it, and despite those were tough negotiations. So I went out for a while."
"It might be a burden to run your own business."
"Yes, until you earn the first million", I assured him.
"The first million? Don't tell me ... you are so young and already have it? "
"Well, it was not easy, but as I said, it was difficult only to earn the first million. Then everything becomes extremely easy. Only I find it quite difficult to tell who likes me because of my millions and who because of myself", I went on.
"You don't think I like you because of your millions, do you? I had no idea you are so rich! It is true, you are dressed very elegantly and you do look like a rich and happy woman, but ... I had no idea that you are a millionaire.
Listen, I'll be honest with you. Long ago I noticed that you come here at the same time. I was impressed by you at first sight. Then I started waiting eagerly for you to come and to see you again and again", his face flushed.

Wow! Actually, it was true. Indeed, I visisted Green Park every day at the same time, wearing some of my best clothes. In the end I was trying to survive after my deepest psycho drama. But why exactly this a bit shabby gentlaman had noticed me? I have to admit he was very handsome and I liked his personality, but he was like Mr. Nobody.
"Yes, I come here quite often", a affirmed in a bit icy voice.
"But you would hardly accept an invitation to dinner somewhere out by such a simple man like me?", he said it with bitterly. He was so sincere.
"Dinner! I'm sick and tired of business dinners so I hate even the thought of it! I want privacy".

Actually I said it because I could not afford a dinner out, and perhaps I should have paid for the gentleman as well. He didn' look like someone who could afford a dinner either. But no, I was absolutely convinced that he didn't mean that it would be me who'd pay the bill.

The gentleman was obviously much cleverer than he looked and he became aware that I didn't want to go out with him. He supposed it was because he was poor. I tried to convince him that it was not so. I asked him where he worked and….hmmm, I knew it…alas he was a supervisor of chambermaids. He also asked me what I exactly did for living. I told him that I was chief sales manager at the Ritz. This impressed him even more.

He asked me for dinner again.
I refused again.
And also I had to start my shift. I said I had to go. He insisted to walk with me but I refused again. He asked me if he could take me home after work.
I did not agree and I explained to him that the black very expensive car in front of the Ritz Still was mine.

We parted, I walked through the staff only entrance, but after a few steps I felt like seing the gentlemen again. Just for a last gilmse. I liked him a lot and was attracted by his personality. Just another glimpse ... and oh, my god!!! My interlocutor in a fresh tempo was heading to the main entrance of the Ritz.

Only now I remembered to look at his business card. Funny, I always read business cards as soon as I have been given them, but this one ... where I had put it. Here!
It was an elegant, expensive business card on which was written in golden letters William J. Shaw!
Where had I known that name from? As I stood dizzy and tried to find the answer… oh my god for the second time! My gentleman had suddenly changed the direction and with a rapid pace had just headed to "my" car! Not only this. He unlocked it, went in, started the engine and drove off.

Now I remembered! William J. Shaw! The owner of the Ritz!!
